CELF 2016 and I Am Festival.

Following the release of her debut children’s book in 2015, Love Thy Fro, Casey realised that there was a void that needed to be filled when it came to diverse literature for children. Speaking with parents and guardians it was clear that no one knew where to look for books that accurately represented their children. Shops didn’t sell them and, if they did, they were few and far between or really expensive, and most children’s events didn’t have them.

Seeing this gap, and wanting to provide a space for children to feel included, Casey decided to create a children’s literary festival that focused on diversity within literature and empowerment.

The festival debuted in July 2016 as the Children’s Empowerment and Literary Festival, and in 2018 was renamed to something we felt was more fitting – I Am Festival – which took place in July 2018.

I Am Festival is all about celebrating and promoting diversity within children’s literature while also looking at ways in which we can inspire and empower children. Aimed primarily at children under 11, the day is made up of workshops and activities for all to get involved with, as well as a marketplace featuring vendors selling a variety of products – including diverse books!
